Understanding Your Audience for Successful Social Media Campaigns
July 28, 2025In social media, strategy wins over noise (that’s why we always say, “strategy before tactics”), and understanding your audience isn’t just helpful; it’s critical. The more niche the industry you’re in, such as oil and gas, specialized tech or manufacturing, or municipal communities, the more important strategy is to build trust, create clarity, and drive real engagement with real people. It starts with knowing exactly who you’re talking to, why they’re there, and what matters most to them.
Start With Who: More Than Job Titles
Your audience is not a generic crowd. Like you, they’re humans with specific goals, pressures, and expectations. So, think about who they are before you start planning what you will say to them.
In a municipality, your audience could include:
- -Residents who expect transparency and responsiveness.
- -City council members looking for results.
- -Media outlets looking for clarity.
- -Vendors or contractors curious about opportunities.
But in the oil and gas market, the list might look more like:
- -Engineers looking for technical insight.
- -Health, Safety, and Environmental professionals monitoring compliance and safety messaging.
- -Local communities that care about environmental and economic impacts.
Considering your particular audience helps ensure you’re not watering down your messaging by trying to speak to everyone at once. No one wins when they try to scream at a room full of people, right? Dig deeper—you’re seeking a connection, not merely an audience.
Platforms Are Tools, Not Strategies
If you haven’t heard this already, not every platform makes sense for every audience. Sometimes, your employees watch your Facebook page while your customers are on LinkedIn. City governments will probably reach older residents on Facebook and younger demographics on TikTok or Instagram.
It’s all about matching your intentions to the right place. Ask yourself:
- -Where does your audience spend time online?
- -What are they doing there?
- -Do they want to learn, be entertained, get informed, or connect?
Your platform and content choice should align with your audience’s behavior, not necessarily what’s trending this month (unless, of course, that’s what they want—and you can use the trend to connect.)
Say It How They Need to Hear It
Tone is a tool. A post about a refinery upgrade for regulators and engineers should sound different than a post about community involvement. When it comes to tone, one size does not fit all:
- -For residents: clear, human, and maybe even warm.
- -For investors: confident, data-driven, and forward-looking.
- -For field crews or internal teams: direct, respectful, and fluff-free.
If your message sounds like it came from a marketing manual, it probably missed the mark because you weren’t talking to the right humans.
Let the Numbers Tell A Story (Not the Whole Story)
There’s no shortage of metrics and numbers. But not every number matters. Likes are nice. Comments, shares, clicks, and saves? Better. But most important are the conversations you spark and the trust you build with your audience and communities over time. Work to turn conversations into conversions—and track those over time.
Listen to what people are telling you through their engagement. Let those insights inform your strategy as you grow.
Real Success Comes From Alignment
We worked with the City of Coweta on a summer social campaign to showcase small-town life and increase civic engagement. The #SmallTownSummer campaign invited residents to share their favorite summer photos on Facebook for a chance to win a gas card.
What made it successful wasn’t just the giveaway but the alignment between the campaign’s tone, platform, and audience. We tapped into civic pride, encouraged user-generated content, and showed people their stories mattered.
The result? A 57.2% increase in engagement, over 14,000 organic impressions, and nearly 1,000 organic interactions. More importantly, it strengthened the city’s connection with its residents and created a sense of online community with a positive tone.
Final Thoughts
When you know your audience, you can communicate with intention. That’s what helps campaigns feel relevant, build trust, and deliver results.
